The Many Health Benefits of Meditation

For possibly thousands of years, meditation experts (yogis) have constantly advised us on the importance of meditation and the many health benefits of meditation. Meditation allows us to release pent up stress and anxiety that has been built up whilst living the hectic daily lives that the modern lifestyle brings with it.

However, modern scientific studies have also now shown that meditation can actually change our body at a genetic level. In actual fact science has now discovered that by meditating, disease-fighting genes in your body become more active, thus increasing the speed at which we can recover from illness.

There are various types of meditation that can cause this including breathing exercises, yoga, and many more.

Some of the medical conditions which are said to benefit from regular meditation are rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure and many others.

OK, so the question remains:

How does meditating help the body to become healthier?

The Health Benefits of Meditation

Well the answer to this is that when our body is in a stressful state, there are stress-induced hormones called cortisol and adrenalin that are produced. The more of these that are produced, the higher our blood pressure and heart rate is, and this weakens our immune system and organ function efficiency.

On the other hand, when we are in a relaxed, meditative state, rather than stress hormones being produced, ‘feel-good’ hormones are produced such as serotonin  in addition to growth hormones that help with cellular repair and healing.

Moreover, rather than weakening the immune system and increasing blood pressure, being in a relaxed state can do the exact opposite when compared to being in a stressful state.

So if you are serious about improving not only the health of your body, but the quality of your life, then you should definitely consider implementing regular meditation exercises to your daily routine. From personal experience, I can certainly extol the many health benefits of meditation and would add to that, that regular daily meditation can truly be life changing!
