6 Steps to Creating a Successful Life

We all possess creativity; it’s actually in our very nature.

Unfortunately many of us where told in the early parts of our lives that we were not creative, and we probably believed it. As a result of this our natural creative instincts were suppressed.

Luckily by following the 6 simple steps outlined below they can be reawakened.

Step 1.

Ask Questions.

Question absolutely everything. The word question comes from the Latin root quarerere (to seek), which is the same root as the word for “quest”. A creative life is a continuous quest. Asking probing questions is indispensable to growth, so don’t take anything for granted.

The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask, so question everything. Here are some examples of questions you could ask yourself during everyday life: –

· Why am I doing this job?
· How can I spend more time with my family?
· What talents have I been neglecting?
· What would happen if I got out of bed an Hour earlier?
· What new habit could I adopt everyday to positively change my life?
· What would happen if I stopped watching Television every evening?

Obviously the above list is not exhaustive, and I am sure you will agree that if you really sat down and thought about it you could come up with an extremely long list of life changing questions.

It is essential that you do not censor yourself no matter how outrageous your question or answer may sound. This allows fresh and unanticipated insights to be revealed to you. So essentially if you are open and honest with yourself and ask questions about every area of your life, you will probably be surprised at some of the answers revealed which may expose some surprising and eye-opening limiting beliefs, which may be holding you back

Your future depends directly upon how well you question and examine your beliefs, values, goals, actions and way of life, so asking the right questions is crucial for a creative life.

Step 2.

Get lots of ideas.

“The best way to get a good idea is to get lots of ideas” said Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize-winning Chemist.

If you only have one idea, one solution to the problem you are facing, then you only have one course of action and that’s quite risky in today’s world of flexibility. The one question one solution approach is deeply ingrained in our thinking, too often when we look for a solution to some problem we are facing, we take the first one that comes along.

So train your mind to look for many solutions, open up your creative channels, “yes that works”, you might say, “but maybe there is an even better answer”. Looking for a second, third or fourth answer stimulates your creative energies and funnily enough quite often it is the second or third solution, the one that may be a little out of the ordinary, that precisely fits the purpose.

So whenever you find yourself thinking that there is only one option available to you, remind yourself that you are not being creative. Life is filled with unending choices and options, open up your options by opening up your thinking.

Step 3.

Be an explorer.

It’s one thing to be open to new ideas and solutions, but it is quite another to be actively seeking them out.

An explorer is constantly trying different ways of doing things, an explorer believes that there are new worlds, new options, new products, new services, methods and ideas just waiting to be discovered.

An explorer will venture off the beaten track. Almost all of the most significant advances in technology, art, education and science have come from someone exploring areas that nobody had thought to investigate before.

Explorers are not afraid of the unknown, they no that success and happiness doesn’t come from following others, but in finding your own unique path, so they forge ahead, always on the lookout.

Step 4.

Use your imagination.

Our imagination is not bound by real world constraints, rules or regulations. Our imagination knows NO limits. Whatever you can conceive and believe with your mind, you can achieve in your life.

Our creative imaginations help us to explore different options and visualize numerous scenarios, outcomes and solutions, therefore by learning to harness this creative power we learn how to control and change/improve our lives.

There are two simple ways of using your imagination to come up with new ideas:

· Imagine how others would do it.

What qualities do you admire in others? Who do you respect for achievement, persistence and vision? Pick a role model, somebody you would like to emulate. It can be somebody living or dead, somebody you may know or somebody you have never met.

Now imagine this person is in your position, faced with your challenges. Try to imagine this person is actually in your body taking over your situation. What would this person do? How would this person go about trying to solve the particular problem? What constraints would they ignore? What expertise would they add? What changes would they make?

This process can be absolutely invaluable in moving us out of our comfort zone and providing us with options we hadn’t even considered.

· Imagine this person conversing and advising you.

This technique gained notoriety when, in 1996, Bob Woodward reported that First Lady Hillary Clinton used to have imaginary conversations with former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

The brilliant author Jean Houston at Camp David taught it to her. It is actually a simple technique, which involves you simply imagining yourself having a real conversation with a person you respect and trust, and listening to the advice that person imparts to you.

Corporate executives and successful sports stars use this technique to great effect, but does it work? Napoleon Hill, author of that great book “Think and Grow Rich” said, that using this technique helped him solve all of the most challenging problems confronting him and his clients and helped him to become a very wealthy man.

Visualization is another great technique to help you overcome a particular problem. You can read all about visualization techniques in this blog post.

Step 5.

Break Rules and Break Habits.

Being creative often means breaking out of old patterns to create new ones. There is no particular virtue in doing things the way they have always been done. Sometimes breaking rules, initiating a revolution in our life, throwing out all of the old patterns and habits is the most sensible way to go.

If your not obtaining the results you want out of life, maybe you need to break some rules:

· How can you shake things up?
· Where in your life do you need a revolution?
· What habits or patterns can you break?

Now is the time, don’t be afraid to make the change, stir things up a bit. Often after the dust has settled, you will find you are better for it.

Step 6.

Nurture Yourself.

We must all learn to be self-nourishing, to be alert enough to consciously and constantly be replenishing our resources. In the new economy people will learn to balance work and leisure much more effectively.

When you value your creativity you learn to stimulate the “you” the person inside, spirit if you like, fun and relaxation are great stimulators. Almost every great achiever in the world has reported that they have often had their greatest breakthroughs after taking time out for contemplation.

This not that hard to understand, because when you are idle your subconscious mind is at it’s most active, so it’s almost always during these quiet times that new ideas arise. Meditation is a great way to clear the mind and can have a positive effect on your life both mentally and physically.

Take a look at this earlier blog post which goes into detail regarding the many health benefits of meditation.

A stimulated and excited mind is much more receptive to new ideas than a stressed and bogged down mind, but if you ever feel guilty about having all this fun, just remind yourself that you are “nurturing yourself” simply by following the 6 steps for a successful life mentioned above.
