Change Just One Thing and Achieve Your Goals
So here we are ALREADY through the 1st quarter of 2018. How’s it going? Are you inline with the goals you set at the beginning of the year? Did you actually set any goals in the first place? The New Year can be very exciting of course, and I’m sure most of us probably made the usual resolutions.
But how do you keep track, and how do you establish if the goals you set are the ones you REALLY need?
So let me begin this blog post today by asking you a few honest questions:
So lets go….
Change Just One Thing and Achieve Your Goals
- Where your goals the same as last year?
- Did you actually accomplish any of your goals last year?
- Did you make any new ones this year?
Everyone needs goals in life. Goals give us direction, guidance, hope. Goals can help you improve your lifestyle, your business, your way of life, and your relationships.
Goals are great because it means you want to live fully in the year to come. However, although actually setting your goals can be easy, the real challenge is reaching them.
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving them”. – Michelangelo
So I would like to give you some simple steps to assist you with your goal setting. Follow these simple steps and your goal setting, but more importantly, your goal achieving will reach new heights of success.
Change Just One Thing and Achieve Your Goals
The first step in reaching your goals is to overcome fear of failure. If the same goal keeps coming up every year, then it is time to examine what you’re afraid of.
If you start out thinking negatively, you likely won’t get very far in your efforts to reach your goals. You may even stop setting that particular goal all together, which you may regret later on.
Negative thoughts or past “failures” may overwhelm you. But if you keep thinking back to past “failures”, were these really failures after all? Did you learn something that you can now put into practice or avoid the next time?
So think back, because even if you only changed one thing, then you know you can change another.
The second step is to identify what goals you want to set. You can start by brainstorming
potential goals. Once you start making a list of your goals you will keep adding to it!
One goal will lead to another. Some possible goal ideas are:
- learn a foreign language.
- stop smoking.
- make more friends.
- travel out of the country.
- start an online business.
- learn a traditional dance.
- show gratitude every day.
- lose weight.
- eat healthier.
or spend more time with your family.
You’re the one that knows what appeals to you and what doesn’t. You aren’t trying to change or control anyone else; you’re changing yourself.
Next, read through your list and ask yourself questions like:
- Where do you start?
- Which goal seems the most exciting?
- Which one is the most challenging?
- Which one will make me proudest of myself if I achieve it?
You see, the best goals for you are the ones that mean the most to you. You might even
select goals that touch all aspects of your life.
Now, after analyzing your list, prioritize it.
Change Just One Thing and Achieve Your Goals
First, select a few short-term goals that you could reach in just a few days. Then choose some long-term goals that will take weeks or months to reach.
The third step is the planning one. Without a plan, you may as well give up. It helps to write everything down on paper – write it on a calendar, your phone – anything that
you’re looking at every day.
Start by listing your goal. Then set a reasonable deadline by which time you hope to have accomplished it.
Next, plan the steps involved in reaching the goal. Be aware that you will have possible setbacks and obstacles and part of your plan should include how to work to overcome them.
Finally, make a commitment to yourself.
Now all you have to do is get busy! Think of something you can do each day that will bring you closer to your goal, no matter how small. Be sure to track your progress and celebrate each step accomplished along the way, no matter how big or small.
If something goes wrong in your plan, re-adjust a little and keep going. And finally, imagine how you will feel once you’ve finally accomplished your goals.
