Make the most of your analytics – you should listen, monitor, measure and improve your social media marketing strategy(s) on a regular and continuous basis.

While we intuitively know that being social is a good thing we still must ALWAYS remember that we operate in a commercial environment, so VERY rarely do we find ourselves (at least from a business point of view anyway) that we can use social media just for the sake of it. (leave that to the stalkers 🙂

The problem is however,  that actually measuring “social” is a huge challenge and probably produces many more questions than answers.

Like PR and other brand-building efforts, social media is one of those valuable things whose impact we can’t agree on how to measure, but the debate on how to do it best, does not reduce it’s value….

Remember what Albert Einstein once said: “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”

But hey, don’t despair!

The trick is to first figure out what your goals and objectives are for each type of activity and then to assign the right attributes to measure against.

Apart from measuring and evaluating your different activities, in most cases the conversation will take place with or without you.  So whether from a purely market research perspective, campaign tracking, product launch or for the purpose of a more advanced digital and social media strategy, you simply can’t ignore these conversations.

The least you can do is listen!

Listening and monitoring will help you discover which conversations are having the most impact on your business, unlock critical insights and develop actionable recommendations. There are now countless ways (both paid for and free) to listen to the conversation.

But you MUST make tracking, monitoring, analysis and measurement of your social media marketing campaigns an integral part of your business.
