How to Get Your Email into The Inbox

Many people have been saying that email marketing is “dead”, but with a look at some statistics from 2017, it becomes obvious that email continues to be one of the most effective marketing tools available.  In fact, it’s said that 95% of consumers use email, and 91% of users check their inbox at least once a day.

So I would say, THAT in itself, is a pretty good argument as to why you should use email marketing in your business.

However, just because a lot of people are using email every day, doesn’t mean it’s becoming easier to get your message in front of them. Irrelevant, bulk messages put email clients immediately on the offensive, trying to stop poor and irrelevant marketers from infiltrating their users’ in-boxes.

So, with that battle against irrelevance raging on, many email marketing messages get confused or wrongly identified as spam and therefore never actually reach the intended recipients, even if they’ve opted-in!

Therefore, the number one challenge for email marketers is to get past the spam filters and into users’ in-boxes. However, when it comes to email marketing, the challenge doesn’t stop there, because once you’ve finally been granted access to the inbox, the next step is getting the email recipient to open your message and take action.

So, the question is, just how do you accomplish that? Well, simply put, be relevant. I can help you do that today with these 5 great tips.

How to Get Your Email Into Your Customers Inbox Every Time

1. Start with the List.

Before you can begin sending your emails, you have to first build your list. There are multiple ways to go about doing this and there are many conflicting theories and practices, but in my opinion the safest way is to make sure you use double opt-in, this means that your subscribers have confirmed that they actually do want to receive your emails.

It’s important to get subscribers to double opt-in because it increases the relevance of your emails, which will dramatically improve your inbox delivery.

How can you get people to opt in to your list? One of the most proven methods is to offer them some sort of incentive or value, then, before they receive their gift they will be asked to confirm that they want to join your list. This will ensure that your subscribers have authorized you to send them email messages, and can therefore expect to see them in the future. Most autoresponders will do this automatically for you.

2. Personalize Your Messages.

The reason email marketing can be so effective is because it provides a one-to-one experience for brands, consumers and subscribers alike, and with the ability to personalize emails – which is unlike any other modern marketing method – it makes sense to take advantage of that.

There are a number of ways for you to personalize your email marketing campaigns; segmenting your list is the first step. When users opt in to your list, be sure to ask them a few identifying questions such as age, hometown, gender, etc. Don’t bombard them with questions, but try to capture as much information as possible so you can send them only the messages that they would want to receive. a REALLY good way to do this is via survey. You can set-up a free survey using survey monkey.

Using detailed subscriber information, which you can access via your autoresponder service provider (such as Aweber) you can control the contents of your emails to be as relevant as possible for the reader(s) you are sending to. It boosts engagement when you customize your emails to suit your recipients.

People today are flooded every day with email after email, so it goes without saying that they’re only going to open the ones that look important or interesting, so you should do whatever it takes to create a unique, individualized experience for each of your subscribers.

3. Focus on Your Subject Line.

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, which is why the subject line of your email is vitally important to getting into the inbox and persuading your subscribers to open your emails. Your subject line is the very first thing they will read when your email lands, so it must grab their attention and be clear and concise all at the same time.

Writing an intriguing subject line is something of an art form—you have to make sure it’s short and sweet and makes the readers believe that they need to open your message. (Take a look at this Blog post for more detailed info on this). If you fail to write a catchy subject line, you can almost guarantee that your open rates and conversion rates will be low.

So, spending some time crafting an enticing subject line before sending your email out, is time well spent. A good idea is to split test different subject lines (most autoresponders have this facility to split test) on small segments of your list to see which one performs best before sending your email to your entire mailing list.

By split testing subject lines, you not only increase your chances of winding up in your subscribers’ inbox’s, but also increase the chances that your email will be opened and the required action taken.

When you’re writing your subject lines, be sure to avoid using all capital letters, too much punctuation, or specific trigger words like “act now,” “all natural,” “100% free,” “attention,” etc.

4. Be Entertaining!

Perhaps the most important part of ensuring good deliver-ability and to generate action from your subscribers and customers, is to keep them engaged and interested in your emails. Your emails should therefore be entertaining and give your subscribers something to look forward to, rather than being an annoyance.

So, you can include short videos (like this one), cool graphics, funny photos, or offer special deals or discounts your subscribers can only get via your email newsletter. By doing this, you’ll provide something of value that doesn’t feel like you are constantly trying to sell them something.

5. Abide by ISP Rules.

An important point to emphasize here, is to remind you that the ultimate goal of an ISP is to protect users and ensure they receive relevant emails. As a result of that, email marketing messages are often subject to filtering before they even make it to their destination. This means it’s incredibly important to understand what ISPs look for when trying to identify spam and to avoid those things at all costs.

Align the goals of your message with the goals of the ISP – aim to be relevant to the audience you’re reaching to – and you stand a much better chance of avoiding filters and therefore boost delivery to the inbox.

It’s also important to maintain consistency in your campaigns, as this is another factor ISPs look at when evaluating the authenticity of a sender and its emails. Using the same sender name, including the same links, similar greetings, and formatting helps the ISPs recognize your messages more easily and help improve your deliver-ability.
